The wild Chinese pangolin was taken by infrared cameras.

A suspected pangolin was found in the Zhangmutou Forest Farm in Dongguan City in late March this year. It was immediately sent to the Guangdong Wildlife Rescue Center for rescue, where experts identified it as the Chinese pangolin, a wild animal under first-class state protection which was listed as "critically endangered" on the Red List by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Experts judged from the weight and colour of the pangolin scale that it was a young adult born in that year. To further confirm the existence of the breeding population of wild Chinese pangolin in Dongguan City, Guangdong Academy of Forestry and the Guangdong Wildlife Rescue Center organized an investigation team to set up infrared cameras for field monitoring in the farm.

On July 3, the team retrieved the field infrared cameras. Two precious videos taken at 2:33 am on April 26 and 10:36 pm on April 29 showed that two adult pangolins were foraging near the infrared cameras.

According to the individual characteristics and distribution of the pangolin in the footage, experts preliminarily judged that they should be two different individuals.Plus the previously rescued younger pangolin, a total of 3 wild Chinese pangolins were found this year in Zhangmutou Forest Farm, further confirming the existence of a wild Chinese pangolin breeding population in Dongguan City. This discovery is of great significance to the conservation and research of Chinese pangolin and its habitat in Guangdong Province.

This is the first time that Chinese pangolin has been found in the wild in Dongguan City in recent 20 years, and the distribution of its breeding population has been successfully monitored. Dongguan City, where Zhangmutou Forest Farm is located, is the core area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In recent years, governments at all levels in the area have attached great importance to the construction of ecological civilization, continue to strengthen forest resources' cultivation and protection, and have achieved remarkable results. The successful monitoring of the wild pangolin breeding population's existence strongly proves that the Greater Bay Area's ecological environment is getting better and better, andbiodiversity is becoming increasingly abundant.
